Which is the best kind of medical marijuana?
Indica and Sativa marijuana
Most marijuana strains which are classified as ‘medical marijuana‘ are Indica-dominant.
Indica-dominant strains tend to promote deep body relaxation, often having narcotic or analgesic effects, and so can relieve pain, muscle tension, and migraine. They also promote feelings of calmness so are obviously helpful for reducing stress and anxiety and insomnia.
Sativa-dominant strains, on the other hand, produce more of an energetic and uplifting mental high and stimulate appetite. This may help alleviate depression, appetite loss, nausea and fatigue though can cause panic attacks in some people, so pure Sativas are best avoided by the anxious!
CBD and THC
The reasons for these differences between Indica and Sativa marijuana are due to the different chemical compounds they contain.
CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannibinol) are the main medically useful chemicals in medical marijuana. Both CBD and THC have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties (for both muscle pain and neurological pain) and reduce nausea.
THC also stimulates appetite, and is used for treating the appetite loss and nausea that can be a side-effect of chemotherapy. CBD has somewhat of a sedative effect and is good for alleviating stress and anxiety.
However, while THC has psychoactive properties – stimulating a mental ‘high’ – CBD does not and it actually counteracts the psychoactive effects of THC, meaning that high-CBD marijuana will give you less of a ‘high’. This effect holds to some extent even if the marijuana is also high in THC.
Indica marijuana generally contains more CBD (cannabidiol) and less THC while Sativa marijuana is higher in THC and lower in CBD.
Most medical marijuana is a hybrid of Indica and Sativa and this often gives you the best of both worlds. Amsterdam Marijuana Seeds point out that adding a Sativa gene to a mostly Indica strain, can support mental clarity and reduce the sedative effects, while adding Indica genes to a Sativa-dominant strain reduces the tendency of pure Sativas to cause anxiety.
So which medical marijuana strain is best for you?
As a general guide, Indica-dominant high-CBD strains are best for those who want physical relief and relaxation without so much of the mental high, e.g., Habiba.
Sativa-dominant strains which are higher in THC and lower in CBD can be helpful for depression, fatigue, appetite loss, and for pain relief for those who don’t want the more sedative effect of high-CBD strains, e.g., Amnesia Trance.
However, many medical marijuana strains, such as AK 47, Chronic, Night Nurse, Girl Scout Cookies, and White Widow are high in both THC and CBD, so you get a balance of physical and mental effects – e.g., relaxation and a happy ‘high’ but without feeling too ‘out of it’.
White Widow is an example of a ‘white strain’ and these are also popular for medical use. White strains are so-called because they become coated in shimmering white crystals of sticky and sweet smelly resin – which is high in THC, although some white strains have a high CBD content too.
Adding a Sativa gene to a mostly Indica strain, can support mental clarity and reduce the sedative effects, while adding Indica genes to a Sativa – dominant – strain reduces the tendency of pure Sativas to cause anxiety.
Growing Medical Marijuana Seeds
Indica-dominant marijuana is also popular for medical use for the practical reason that they’re easier to grow indoors, being shorter and bushier plants with a shorter growing season, requiring less light than Sativas, and also generally producing a higher yield.
